Inner City Clonazepam Use

Inner City Clonazepam UseWhere drug users live can affect the type of drug they choose to abuse. Clonazepam is found everywhere, but clonazepam abuse is particularly a problem in inner cities because the drug is more readily available there.

Who Abuses Clonazepam?

Clonazepam is one of a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), almost 85 percent of benzodiazepine substance abuse admissions occur within white, non-Hispanic races. Inner cities are well known for having high unemployment rates, and 43.3 percent of benzodiazepine admissions were unemployed, with another 37.3 percent of users not in the labor force. These statistics explain in part how living in inner cities puts individuals at a heightened risk for clonazepam abuse and addiction.

Clonazepam Abuse and Other Drugs

Individuals who abuse other drugs besides clonazepam are at greater risk for using clonazepam. In fact, 95 percent of benzodiazepine admissions reportedly abused other substances besides benzodiazepines. Of those, 82 percent reported benzodiazepines as their secondary drug of abuse while 12.9 percent reported benzodiazepines as their drug of choice with another drug as a secondary drug. Illegal drug use is a problem in inner cities, and abusing multiple drugs makes it more likely that individuals will engage in benzodiazepine abuse. Becoming addicted to more than one drug can make ending substance abuse even more difficult.
