According to the National Drug Strategy Household Survey, in 2010 3.2% of Australians had used benzodiazepines for non-medical purposes at some stage in life. While this may seem like a small percentage, this means that close to one million Australians have used or continue to use benzodiazepines for non-medical purposes. The brand name Klonopin refers to clonazepam, an anti-anxiety medication to treat the following problems:

Epilepsy

Panic attacks

Insomnia

Rapid eye movement behavior disorder

Anxiety disorders

Restless leg syndrome (RLS)

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Night terrors

Tourette syndrome

Schizophrenia

As a benzodiazepine, clonazepam can cause physical dependence. After a few months of daily use, it is recommended that discontinuation be managed through gradually reducing the dose.

Clonazepam Side Effects

Some of the side effects of clonazepam abuse include the following problems:

Drowsiness

Irritability and aggression

Lack of motivation

Loss of libido

Impaired motor function

Impaired coordination

Impaired balance

Feelings of loss of self-worth

Agitation

Dizziness

Cognitive impairments

Hallucinations

Short-term memory loss

Hangover-like symptoms, being drowsy, having a headache, being sluggish and being irritable

Clonazepam suppresses REM sleep, so rebound insomnia can occur when discontinuing the drug

Confusion

In addition, if people take clonazepam for many months, they risk seizures, tremors, muscle cramping, vomiting and sweating if they stop using suddenly.

Clonazepam Withdrawal Symptoms

Clonazepam corrects chemical imbalances in the brain, but it also has muscle-relaxing and hypnotic properties, for which people abuse the drug. Some of the withdrawal symptoms from clonazepam are relatively minor and include the following issues:

Dry mouth, extreme thirst

Increased sweating and flushing

Abdominal cramping with pain

Bloating and belching

Constipation, diarrhea and hemorrhoids

Indigestion, and heartburn

Nausea, gagging, vomiting and difficulty swallowing

Fatigue, fever and hot flashes

Bruising, swelling and nosebleeds

Weight fluctuations

Joint and muscle cramping, stiffness, weakness and pain

Headaches, dizziness and fainting

Shortness of breath and coughing

Laryngitis, bronchitis and sinusitis

Dry lips/skin, eczema and dermatitis

Eye irritation, infection and conjunctivitis

Abnormal or blurred vision

Aggravated nervousness, agitation, anxiety and excitability

Impaired concentration, confusion, disorientation and forgetfulness

Apathy, depression, irritability, lethargy and decreased libido

Clonazepam withdrawal can also bring about the following serious withdrawal symptoms:

Anemia

Increased or decreased heart rate, palpitations

Hypertension

Gastrointestinal reflux or tumors

Edema

Chest pains

Arthritis

Gout

Elevated cholesterol

Urinary tract infections

Kidney stones

Grand mal seizures

Suicidal tendencies

Many people who abuse clonazepam do not quit using for fear of these serious issues.

Prescription drug abuse is an increasing problem in many countries, especially Asian ones. Among the drugs of abuse, benzodiazepines such as clonazepam (trade name Klonopin in the U.S.) have taken their toll on the lives of individuals around the world. Clonazepam is a prescription benzodiazepine prescribed for seizures, anxiety disorders and panic disorders. Benzodiazepines like clonazepam are considered central nervous system depressants, because they work directly on the brain to slow nerve activity.

Asian Attitudes on Drug Use

The World Health Organization and the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) provide statistics on global drug use. In South East Asia and other regions, data demonstrated that many people in these areas approve of substance abuse, believe that substance abuse entails slight or no risk and that these drugs are easy to obtain. One factor that affects the prevalence of benzodiazepine abuse in Asian countries is a long-standing relaxed stance on recreational opium abuse. Benzodiazepines, like opium, are central nervous system depressants, which relax the body and mind, thus laying the groundwork for Asians to accept benzodiazepine abuse.

What Drug Abuse Patterns Are Prevalent in Asian Countries?

The rise of drug trafficking in Central Asia has led to higher drug abuse rates. Use of opium and cannabis was predominant until the large-scale drug trafficking, as well as the availability of prescription drugs, influenced patterns of drug abuse and use. According to a recent UNODC report, there has been a substantial rise in prescription drug abuse in South Asia in the last decade. Availability and affordability of pharmaceuticals have influenced the prevalence of clonazepam use, and UNODC statistics also assert that most countries in Southwest and Central Asia have opiate abuse rates higher than the world average.

There is limited data from populous countries in Asia, such as China and India, and few countries in Asia monitor drug abuse through population based surveys or other sources.

Clonazepam Addiction Help for Asian Countries

Asia’s inpatient rehab facilities provide detox and rehab services that guide patients in their journeys of clonazepam addiction recovery. Integrating physical and psychological treatment services provide a better chance of long-lasting recovery from clonazepam and other substance abuse. Holistic treatment options can offer patients a more rounded experience. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, relapse prevention and group therapy help patients achieve healing from substance abuse and addiction, so seek help to ensure that you treat and beat your addiction to this powerful drug.

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine drug that is commonly referred to as a tranquilizer. Doctors typically prescribe it to treat insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks. It works by enhancing the effects of neurotransmitters in the brain to create a sense of calm.

When taken for short periods of time as directed, clonazepam is relatively safe and carries little risk of overdose. However, long-term use can lead to tolerance, physical dependence and psychological addiction. Prescription drug abuse is defined by the following criteria:

Using a medication without a prescription

Using a medication in a way other than as prescribed

Using a medication for the drugs it generates

People who abuse the drug increase their risk of addiction. Possible signs of clonazepam addiction include the following:

Tolerance

Withdrawal when the medication is discontinued

Taking the drug in ways and at doses other than prescribed by a physician

Preoccupation with acquiring the drug

Social isolation resulting from increased use

People who abruptly stop taking clonazepam sometimes experience seizures, delirium tremens and possible death. Medical supervision is vital for a safe recovery.

Personality Disorders and Clonazepam

There is no evidence that clonazepam causes personality disorders. A high percentage of individuals who abuse tranquilizers such as clonazepam, however, also suffer from mental health problems. In fact, over half of all adults with severe mental illness also struggle with substance abuse. One reason could be genetic. The gene that puts people at risk for personality disorders may also increase their vulnerability to substance abuse.

A second explanation could be the need to self-medicate and numb emotional pain. Many panic and anxiety disorders stem from traumatic experiences or an unstable mental state. Taking a tranquilizer can bring temporary relief to mental turmoil caused by disorders such as PTSD or dissociative personality disorder, a condition characterized by two or more distinct personality states. Individuals who abuse clonazepam may be trying to escape their symptoms.

Co-occurring disorders create a vicious cycle. When issues related to the mental illness worsen, the addiction often does too. When clonazepam abuse flares, defenses against mental illness, such as positive coping skills and social support, often diminish.

Both clonazepam addiction and a personality disorder must be treated comprehensively in order to achieve sobriety. Because addiction is a problem that brings both psychological and physical effects, treatment must extend beyond detox. With therapy, careful management of medication and ongoing support to avoid relapse, full recovery is possible.

People over the age of 65 are at high risk for developing an addiction to prescription drugs such as clonazepam. Senior citizens tend to use prescription drugs three times more frequently than others and have a low rate of complying with the directed use of the drug. The elderly use more psychoactive drugs like clonazepam than any other demographic. Some of the reasons that senior citizens misuse prescription drugs like clonazepam include the following:

History of drug abuse

Chronic pain

Anxiety

Insomnia

To cope with emotional suffering

Loss of a spouse

Loneliness

Financial problems

Medical problems

Family members often do not expect their elderly parents or grandparents to abuse clonazepam, which can enable the abuse to go on unnoticed. The continued misuse of clonazepam can cause the elderly to develop a tolerance which requires them to use more of the drug more often to produce the intended effects. This process leads to physical dependence and addiction. Due to conditions that the elderly often experience such as seizures, anxiety, heart problems, and panic attacks, the potential for addiction to clonazepam is high. Senior citizens are often unwilling to admit that they have a problem with clonazepam or are addicted to it. They will often believe that it is too late to seek treatment for addiction or to get professional help because of their age. However, there are specialized addiction treatment facilities specifically designed for senior citizens struggling with addiction.

Addiction Treatment for Senior Citizens

Senior citizen focused drug rehab programs offer a specialized treatment experience for people over the age of 65 struggling with addiction to substances such as clonazepam. It is important for elderly addicts to take part in a treatment program that is specifically designed for them. Their problems, behaviors, health and grief issues are much different than that of young adults or middle aged addicts. It would not be conducive for a senior citizen to go through drug rehab with much younger addicts who are more prone to outbursts of anger and other forms of negative expression. Senior citizens would benefit more from a group therapy session if all the other members were in the same general age range. It is easier for them to relate to each other and gain supportive advice from the different personal experiences with addiction. Addiction treatment for senior citizens at a licensed facility will offer the following:

Medically supervised drug detox with a compassionate staff

Individual therapy

Group therapy supervised by addiction recovery specialists

Holistic treatment that addresses all aspects of physical, emotional, behavioral, and mental health

Comprehensive outpatient support after treatment has been completed to ensure that the individual stays drug free.

Although senior citizens tend to avoid treatment for addiction to clonazepam, they are often more pro-active once in treatment and have higher rates of completing a rehab program. A professional intervention may be necessary to get an elderly loved one to accept treatment.

Getting sober from clonazepam addiction is a wonderful accomplishment. Most clonazepam addicts who choose seek recovery and persevere through treatment do not wish to jeopardize their recovery in any way. However, while vacation is a great way to relax and spend time with friends and family, it presents a challenge for many recovering addicts. Plan ahead before you travel to safeguard your recovery from clonazepam abuse.

How Vacation Can Challenge Clonazepam Addiction Recovery

Establishing a routine and taking on responsibilities are good ways for recovering addicts to continue sobriety. Many activities bolster addiction recovery, like going to work, exercising, eating right, spending time with supportive friends and family members and avoiding places with strong temptations to use. While vacation can celebrate a sober life, it has drawbacks that recovering addicts should anticipate. Here are some examples of how vacation challenges recovering clonazepam addicts:

A lack of accountability – When recovering addicts leave the comfort of home, they also leave behind many people who support sobriety and hold them accountable. Addicts may feel distant from family members, friends and support groups, and this isolation can heighten if the addict is vacationing with friends who use drugs.

Availability of drugs – Whether in a hotel room with a mini-fridge, or in a bar with friends and strangers, substances of abuse may be readily accessible while people are travelling

Tendency to overindulge – People are accustomed to relaxing, eating and having fun on vacation, and are often willing to spend more money doing it than they would at home. While this creates fun and lasting memories, the lack of inhibitions can be dangerous for a recovering clonazepam addict.

Relapse triggers – Letting loose and having fun can make an addict recall memories of a time when she indulged in clonazepam. Traveling with or visiting friends who enabled and encouraged drug abuse could make avoiding relapse even more difficult.

In short, vacation can challenge clonazepam addiction recovery, so users should seek help to safeguard recovery while they are away from home.

How to Avoid Clonazepam Relapse during Vacation

Before going on vacation, recovering clonazepam addicts can safeguard recovery with the following actions:

Seek accountability – This could mean anything from calling a supportive friend or family member once a day to finding a meeting for recovering addicts. It is common for people to seek out groups like this on vacation and to feel welcomed.

Plan every day of vacation – Adhering to a schedule will help recovering clonazepam addicts avoid the boredom that could lead to relapse. Planning fun and relaxing activities will ward of the temptation to relapse.

Know your limits – While vacation is enjoyable and relieves stress, it may be a bad idea if a recovering addict feels he cannot avoid the temptation to relapse. No vacation is worth the risk of jeopardizing the progress of recovery. Vacation would be more enjoyable when recovering addicts can enjoy it rather than face anxiety over relapse.

If you anticipate the problems of vacation, you can stay clean while you travel.

Clonazepam is in the benzodiazepine family of drugs and is used to treat seizure disorders and panic disorders. Clonazepam works by slowing brain chemicals that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety. Clonazepam is highly habit-forming, and those who use the drug in larger amounts or for longer periods of time than prescribed by a physician risk addiction. Because the drug produces many of the same side effects as other illicit drugs, many young adults are using the drug to get high. The side effects of clonazepam include the following:

Confusion

Hallucinations

Unusual thoughts or behaviors

Unusual risk-taking behavior with no fear of danger

Weak or shallow breathing

Unusual or involuntary eye movements

Pounding heartbeats or fluttering in the chest

Painful, difficult or less frequent urination

Pale skin

Easy bruising or bleeding

New or worsening seizures

Because clonazepam is intended to treat anxiety and seizures, it can have adverse effects on those who use the drug for recreational purposes.

Prescription Drug Statistics

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the number of people ages 18 to 25 who used a prescription drug for non-medical purposes in the last year remained essentially the same as in prior years. Young adults ages 18 to 25 continue to have the highest rate of non-medical use of a prescription drug, followed by adolescents ages 12 to 17. The use of prescription drugs like clonazepam for recreational purposes is second only to marijuana. Most young adults receive prescription drugs from a friend or family member. Studies also show that less than 13 percent of those with a prescription drug addiction receive any kind of treatment.

Young Adults and Prescription Drug Abuse

Young adults in the 18 to 25 year old bracket are in a unique place in their lives, and this could be a contributing factor in the abuse of prescription drugs. Many are in college and still undecided about careers, marriage and other life-changing adult decisions. Young adults also continue to be somewhat motivated by peer pressure and can be easily talked into trying a recreational drug for the experience. Young adults may also abuse prescription drugs as a way to cope with increased stress levels associated with performance expectations. In any case, the recreational use of prescription drugs like clonazepam can quickly lead to addiction. Young adults who find themselves struggling with prescription drug addiction can take advantage of the many programs available on college campuses that help those struggling with drug abuse problems find a treatment program.

While a comprehensive professional treatment program is the most successful treatment option for many clonazepam addicts, others respond better to having more control over their recovery process. These individuals may elect to find their own solutions and employ the self-discipline necessary for clonazepam recovery.

Natural or holistic recovery is recovery that occurs without traditional treatment. The philosophy behind many holistic treatment models is that addiction is not merely physical and psychological, but spiritual as well. Various methods work for different people and can be combined with traditional treatment options in order to best suit an addict’s needs during recovery. Whether an addict elects to employ only natural treatment methods or to integrate natural treatment methods into a traditional program, the goal of natural treatment is to promote recovery that does not rely exclusively on experts.

Clonazepam Addiction

Clonazepam, which is sold under the brand name Klonopin, is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. It is prescribed for the treatment of anxiety and seizure disorders. It directly affects the central nervous system to produce a sense of calm and relaxation. Symptoms of clonazepam addiction include the following:

Depression

Amnesia

Drowsiness

Headaches

Slurred speech

Constipation

Diarrhea

Nausea and vomiting

Restlessness

Muscle and/or bone pain

The side effects of a clonazepam addiction can be life threatening. Because benzodiazepines depress the central nervous system, side effects can include decreased respiratory function and slowed heart rate.

A clonazepam addict should pursue the treatment option that best suits his or her needs, whether this means a strictly holistic approach to recovery, a comprehensive professional treatment program or an integrated recovery model.

Holistic Recovery Methods

Holistic recovery options include activities such as the following:

Aromatherapy

Meditation

Fitness activities

Wilderness therapy

Biofeedback

Acupuncture

Organic diet

Massage therapy

Music therapy

Art therapy

Spiritual meetings

Equine therapy

Vitamin and mineral therapy

Recreational therapy

Combining these holistic options with a traditional treatment model can create a well-rounded approach to the recovery process. It gives the addict structure and freedom and guidance with an opportunity to be empowered by the strength of his or her self-discipline. Many integrated programs involve individual, group and family therapy.

Where drug users live can affect the type of drug they choose to abuse. Clonazepam is found everywhere, but clonazepam abuse is particularly a problem in inner cities because the drug is more readily available there.

Who Abuses Clonazepam?

Clonazepam is one of a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), almost 85 percent of benzodiazepine substance abuse admissions occur within white, non-Hispanic races. Inner cities are well known for having high unemployment rates, and 43.3 percent of benzodiazepine admissions were unemployed, with another 37.3 percent of users not in the labor force. These statistics explain in part how living in inner cities puts individuals at a heightened risk for clonazepam abuse and addiction.

Clonazepam Abuse and Other Drugs

Individuals who abuse other drugs besides clonazepam are at greater risk for using clonazepam. In fact, 95 percent of benzodiazepine admissions reportedly abused other substances besides benzodiazepines. Of those, 82 percent reported benzodiazepines as their secondary drug of abuse while 12.9 percent reported benzodiazepines as their drug of choice with another drug as a secondary drug. Illegal drug use is a problem in inner cities, and abusing multiple drugs makes it more likely that individuals will engage in benzodiazepine abuse. Becoming addicted to more than one drug can make ending substance abuse even more difficult.

Addicted to Clonazepam?

Clonazepam addiction is a serious problem that will hold you back from achieving your full potential and can cause serious health and legal problems. If you are abusing clonazepam, you should seek professional addiction treatment. Professional treatment for clonazepam addiction will help you learn more about your addiction and how to live without clonazepam. Our toll-free helpline is available to you 24 hours a day, and our trained addiction experts are standing by to answer your questions about clonazepam addiction and to direct you to an effective treatment center. Call now.

Defined as keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss, grief is an extremely difficult emotion to handle. It is often coupled with sorrow and painful regret. While grief is perceived to be a natural response to death or loss, individuals need to understand how grief can affect every part of their life.

Physical and Emotional Impacts of Grief

Most people are familiar with the various stages of grief, starting with denial and then moving toward acceptance. The physical and emotional impacts of grief seem to follow this same path and change as your healing progresses. Grieving people often experience a variety of physical and emotional impacts, including the following:

Exhaustion – This physical condition is often the most frequently described feeling from a person who has just begun to grieve. Every daily activity seems insurmountable because of this consuming feeling of exhaustion. While people want to jump over this feeling, it is important that a person get the rest that is necessary during this phase. Be sure to take vitamins, exercise, eat well and rest as much as you need.

Distraction – Prior to the event that initiated your grief, you may have been considered focused, organized and able to handle many things. It is frightening to lose those capabilities, but it will only be for a short time. Distraction is a sign that you are overdoing or rushing the grieving process.

Physical reactions – Some common physical reactions include pain, sleep difficulties, poor appetite, shakiness, listlessness, headaches, dizziness, crying and even shortness of breath. Your body is reacting to the burden of grief, and you need to pay attention to these signs and nurture yourself back to a balanced physical state.

It is important to understand the stages of grief and the associated physical and emotional impacts so that you can avoid making poor decisions to get through, such as turning to alcohol or drug use.

About Clonazepam

The brand name Klonopin refers to clonazepam, which is an anti-anxiety medication in the benzodiazepine family. Like all benzodiazepines, clonazepam can cause physical dependence. Therefore, after a few months of daily use, it is recommended that discontinuation be managed through a gradual reduction of the dose.

Clonazepam Side Effects

Some of the side effects of clonazepam include the following:

Drowsiness

Irritability and aggression

Lack of motivation

Loss of libido

Impaired motor function

Impaired coordination

Impaired balance

Feelings of loss of self-worth

Agitation

Dizziness

Cognitive impairments

Hallucinations

Short-term memory loss

Hangover-like symptoms, such as being drowsy, having a headache, being sluggish and being irritable

Confusion

Benzodiazepines such as clonazepam suppress REM deep sleep; therefore, after regular use rebound insomnia can occur when discontinuing clonazepam.

If you are abusing clonazepam, you need to seek addiction treatment help.

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine narcotic that acts as a sedative-hypnotic. The drug is primarily prescribed to treat conditions like insomnia, panic disorders, seizure disorders and anxiety. The effects of clonazepam are calming because the drug depresses the brain’s central nervous system. As a result, a user experiences a relaxing effect in mood and energy levels and sometimes even feelings of euphoria.

Clonazepam is a drug with high addictive potential. Lacking healthy coping skills increases a person’s risk for developing clonazepam addiction, especially if the individual has a pre-existing condition that is treated with the drug. Bad days, stress, disappointment and both physical and emotional pain are issues that every individual must face, and being able to cope with these unfortunate situations in a healthy manner is crucial. Overcoming stress and challenges is a normal part of life, but sometimes the obstacles seem too large. This happens frequently to people who struggle with anxiety or panic disorders. When individuals lack healthy coping skills, they turn to whatever seems easiest or the least painful. Coping with loss, pain, grief, guilt or stress is difficult and can make individuals reach out for the first thing that will numb their pain or help them forget their problems. Drugs and alcohol are one of the most common forms of negative coping mechanisms because they have the power to quickly alter one’s mood and relieve physical, mental and emotional pain. With its claiming and euphoric effects, clonazepam is a likely drug choice for individuals with poor coping skills. Instead of addressing problematic issues or stressors, these individuals can simply take a pill to escape. However, the problems do not and will not go away.

Learning Healthy Coping Skills during Addiction Recovery

Although clonazepam is a useful tool for treating symptoms of anxiety or panic, it should not be taken long term because of the potential for chemical dependency and psychological addiction. Stress and difficult times are a part of life, and individuals must learn to cope with these situations in a healthy manner. Lacking healthy coping skills can lead to self-isolation, mental health problems, addiction, dysfunctional relationships and many more dangerous outcomes. Developing healthy coping skills takes time, but any individual can learn and utilize new coping strategies. A drug is never going to provide an individual with the solution he or she needs for overcoming a tough issue. Until an individual is able to address issues, he or she will never be able to move forward with life. By learning and utilizing healthy coping mechanisms, individuals can address and overcome obstacles. Addiction treatment and recovery programs help patients to develop positive thought patterns and behaviors that support their abstinence. Developing healthy coping mechanisms in addiction recovery will help prevent relapse.
