7 Things You Need in a Treatment Program

Individual and group therapy sessions are generally the heart of addiction treatment

A publication entitled Principles of Effective Treatment: A Research-Based Guide stresses that no single treatment program is the right choice for every individual. The best match depends on multiple characteristics of both patients and their substances of choice. People suffering from addiction can be treated in a residential program or on an outpatient basis, and the nature and duration of services can vary. All programs, however, share some common essential elements.

What to Look for in Addiction Treatment

If you are struggling with addiction to clonazepam or another substance, look for a treatment program that includes the following:

  1. Detox – The first stage of addiction treatment is detoxification, often known simply as detox. When people are dependent on drugs or alcohol, they experience withdrawal symptoms when the substances are not in the body. Detox generally refers to experiencing these symptoms under medical supervision while being kept as comfortable as possible. The length and strength of the detox process varies considerably, based on the substances involved and the amount of time that patients have been physically dependent on them. The notes that the essential elements of detoxification are evaluation, stabilization, and preparing patients for further addiction treatment. Patients may undergo detox in the same facility in which they receive further treatment, or may undergo detox in a hospital, clinic, or on an outpatient basis before entering an addiction treatment program.
  2. Counseling – Individual and group therapy sessions are generally the heart of addiction treatment. Group therapy can involve both sessions with other patients and those with family or partners. Sessions with other patients can help individuals recognize common patterns of use and learn from the experiences of others. A helpful sense of camaraderie and support can also develop.Individual therapy sessions are also important because although there are commonalities among people who suffer from addiction, all people have individual histories and substance use triggers that need to be addressed. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common addiction treatment modality utilized in individual therapy. In CBT, patients learn to identify and counteract untrue or unhelpful thoughts and feelings that may contribute to counterproductive behavior.
  3. Education – It is important that patients understand the nature of addiction and what to expect as they move through recovery. Patients will be taught common relapse triggers and how to avoid them. They will also be taught relapse prevention skills and how to combat cravings, such as with distraction or urge surfing. Other life skills, such as anger management or communication techniques, may also be taught.
  4. Motivational enhancement – It is not uncommon for people to enter the addiction treatment process with a degree of ambivalence about giving up drugs or alcohol. Clinicians have observed five stages involved in making a lasting change. These are pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. During treatment, counselors will try to determine in what stage their patients are currently operating and help them move through the process. This may simply take place during counseling, or may also involve external sanctions and rewards, such as the receipt of redeemable vouchers when goals are reached.
  5. Treatment of co-occurring disorders – Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder often co-exist with addiction. The National Alliance on Mental Illness states that about 37% of people addicted to alcohol and 53% of those addicted to drugs have at least one mental health disorder. When substance addiction and mental illness occur together, treating them in an integrated and coordinated manner leads to the best treatment outcomes. A quality treatment program will address all conditions identified and will continually monitor progress in each area.
  6. Medication management – Addiction to some substances can be treated with medications, and if clinicians and patients decide to use it, monitoring effectiveness and dosage levels is important. In other situations, medication is needed to treat a co-existing physical or mental health condition, and it is important to find those that do not interfere with recovery goals. Even patients who do not take medication on a regular basis need to learn what types of over-the-counter products might be better than others to use when treating minor illnesses.
  7. Aftercare – Patients need support during the period of time in which they are applying skills learned in rehab to their everyday work, family, and leisure situations. Programs may approach aftercare in various ways. Aftercare for both outpatient and residential rehab programs usually involves participating in outpatient counseling sessions at a lower intensity or frequency than during active treatment. Weekly sessions are common, and may be individual, group, or a combination. Some programs have patients meet more frequently at the beginning of the process and then slowly lengthen the time between sessions.

There are many options available to meet your specific addiction recovery needs. Depending on the length and severity of your clonazepam addiction, treatment professionals can help determine the best course of treatment for you.
