3 Ways to Prepare Yourself for Rehab

Deciding to enter treatment for an addiction to clonazepam or other addictive substance is an important step. During the days before treatment begins, it is helpful to prepare mentally and emotionally as well as deal with the logistics involved. Putting yourself in the best position to succeed is worth the time and effort. Read on to learn three ways to prepare yourself for addiction treatment.

Increase Your Motivation

It is normal for people to enter rehab with a degree of ambivalence about the change process. However, the more quickly this can be resolved, and the higher the motivation to change, the better. There are things you can do to increase your motivation before rehab even begins.

A publication by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration notes that motivation often begins to grow when people recognize the distance between their goals and their current situation. It can be helpful to think through your values and desires for life. Note the ways in which substance abuse interferes. Building motivation can be as simple as making a list of all the negatives associated with substance abuse. These can be things that addiction has cost you personally, as well as likely consequences if it is to continue. Make a thorough list and read through it often.

It is also helpful to think through obstacles to change. These can be life circumstances as well as mental and emotional conditions. Your counselors will help you recognize and address obstacles, but if you have already considered some of them, and possible ways to address them, it can be beneficial and can accelerate the recovery process.

Build Hope for Recovery

People are likely to devote more energy to a pursuit when they are convinced they can be successful. Building hope involves both becoming convinced that a task is achievable and that you, personally, have what is necessary to succeed.  It can be very beneficial and encouraging to read the stories of others who have overcome addiction or to talk to them personally. There are websites, such as Heroes in Recovery, where people share their journeys. Although all stories of recovery can help build hope, stories of people who share multiple characteristics with you can be especially useful for the purpose.

The belief in your ability to achieve a task is known as self-efficacy. A 2015 study reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that self-efficacy was important in helping patients both achieve and maintain abstinence. Building belief in yourself can be done by remembering past successes. What other goals have you set for yourself and met?  Focusing on even small changes or goals you have achieved can be helpful.

Hope can also be enhanced by focusing on stress reduction and by fostering a positive mood. All tasks seem more overwhelming when under stress. There are techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation that can help promote a positive state of mind. Taking time to enjoy humor or engage in a relaxing activity like doing a jigsaw puzzle can also be helpful.

Practice Self-evaluation

Addiction recovery involves being honest with yourself and with others. Admitting the reality of addiction and the need for treatment is an important first step. It is also important to build on that by developing the habit of honestly evaluating behaviors, thoughts and feelings.

Self-evaluation begins with focus. It is common for thoughts and feelings to exist just below the threshold of conscious awareness and for people to act on emotions they have not fully acknowledged. Developing the habit of checking in with yourself on a regular basis can be very useful. Some people find it helpful to begin keeping a journal that will help them identify patterns.

The foundational publication from Alcoholics Anonymous, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, discusses the importance of taking personal inventory on a regular basis. It recommends spot checks, taken whenever a problem arises, a regular end-of-the-day evaluation, and occasional thorough reviews. Self-appraisal is a very important tool in a recovery toolkit.
